My heart goes out to you. Gene is a lovely woman. She has loved and cared about you and your children. You are going to miss her. You can’t help but miss her. But she will be waiting for you. I know that you will lovingly embrace her again.
Harley, Sherry and I want you to know that we love you and we share in your sadness at Gene's passing. She was a beautiful person on every level. I can not tell you how much your testimonies of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ have strengthened my own. I recall sitting in your home listening to you and Gene recall your lives together. What a beautiful love story you are. I feel privileged to have been present to hear Gene's last testimony to our ward. We stand ready to assist you in any way that you need. You have blessed our lives, please let us serve you. I hope you can take solace in this very difficult time knowing that you will be together with Gene again. With much love in Christ.
Part 1 of 2 I love Gene so much! I loved listening to her life's experiences. I asked Gene (via email) about her missionary experience in South Africa. This was her response. I wish I could have heard about the Wild Baboons:
About our mission in S. Africa: VERY civilized. The church has been there since the late 1880’s and is very strong and growing. We met several of the descendents of the people who welcomed the 1st missionaries. In the large cities it’s sort of like being in the mid sized cities in the States 50 years ago, but otherwise quite wonderful. We were NEVER in the “bush”, altho some of the Elders lived in pretty primitive places. At first our biggest challenge was renting a room in a wonderful Sister’s home in one of the best neighborhoods.....the room didn’t measure up to the neighborhood. When we 1st arrived in Capetown, after a couple of nites in the Mission Pres’ home, (in a guest room where they told us Elder & Sister Maxwell had just been.... we were so tired after that awful trip down there, we really didn’t care who had slept there. we just wanted to be sure we were the next ones) we moved into a ‘ the room’. It was large enough...the double bed was sort of hollowed like a hammock. We immediately bought a sheet of plywood so we could at least lay flat, and forgot about the “soft” or “select Comfort". The bath was across the back porch and shared with a male church member. We ate in the kitchen at an old enamel topped table while a HUGE Lab named Brrrrrruno sat in back of Harley in a wicker chair & “snorted & smacked & made other obnoxious noises as he ate yesterday’s bread...........and .............as the cat roamed the drainboards where it’s dishes were kept so Brrrrruno wouldn’t eat that chow.!!!! The custom there is to cook one large meal a day, at noon, leave it in the oven & then have it again for dinner. Harley got food poisoning and was so bad that a Doctor, there doing some research or study and renting another room in the house, gave him shots after about 3 days to get him over the retching & heaving. As he became better, and thought he might live, he said “I don’t think I can go back in there at that table and eat”....I told him not to worry because we were being sent to Durban the next week and had been invited out for most meals and we could go out to eat on any ‘open’ days.........and besides, by then the cat had taken his place and sat at the end ON the table and licked his paws clean at each meal!
Part 2 of 2 After we left two Missionaries were moved in there and after a couple of weeks, they said “We can’t live here, it’s awful” .....they were told....”The Thompson’s lived there” and they said, “Well they were new, they didn’t know any better”. !! Too true. When we went to Durban, across 2 little native non-friendly countrys between Port Elizabeth & Capetown, where we had to show passports, visas, etc. we were told NOT to stop for anything....if we hit dog, goat or person, not to stop or they (the natives) would kill us, but to drive til we saw a Police Station. We had to stop once for H......it was a deserted area, not a house, business or person in sight. Before he got back into the car, there were people coming from all directions, over the little hillsides !!!! We were also warned to be out of that area (Transkei or Siskei) BEFORE NOON because they all got drunk and were viscious! (I don’t think they are separate countries any more) When we got to Durban, I found a nice apt. on the 24th floor of a building overlooking the harbor. Aside from a “live in” Ghecko( little lizard type thing that I can’t spell) we (and he) loved it up there ! He was harmless and very quiet & never shared our food or bed (to our knowledge). Well, when you ask me a question, I shouldn’t take it so literally---my book is almost finished !! One more thing, we didn’t have emails or FB or cell phones !!! We WROTE letters each week to our kids and our Mission Pres. Once our daughter called us with the excuse that she needed to get her Dad’s Caesar Salad dressing recipe !!! She was pretty stressed not hearing our voices for 8 or so months. At that time we were living in Port Elizabeth in a nice fully furnished house. The owner couldn’t bear to live there alone any longer. She had gone across a little park, in sight of her house, to meet her grand daughter coming from Kindergarten at noon & when they went back into to her home, a ’native’ was in there. She saw him first, grabbed the child and ran. ALL the houses have bars on the windows and doors and glass on top of the surrounding walls. We were always VERY CAREFUL to lock/unlock our car and/or house EACH time we went in or out !!! Unfortunately, it has gotten worse down there. It’s a gorgeous country tho, advertised as a “world in one country”--Capetown is similar to San Diego; Durban to Florida; central area with wheatlands to our mid-west; Port Eliz & that area to our Gulf Coast.....magnificent flowering trees, foliage, flowers, mountains, etc. We were there for about a year and a half & for the dedication of the Johannesburg Temple....great experience. Sometime I’ll tell you about our experience with the wild BABOONS. Gotta quit....I’m worn out and you will be too. Much much love Gene
Harley, We will miss Gene very much. She was such a sweetheart! You both have been such a great example to our family. Gene was such a great visiting teacher and a true friend. She always remembered my birthday even after we had moved away. I always enjoyed her e-mail updates of how you both were doing through the past few years. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Much Love, The Percival Family
Harley; Although I did not know Gene well, I sure admire and respect you both. I know you enjoyed an incredible life together and she will be missed here. My condolences to you and your family. John Fisher
Dearest Harley, My life is better because I knew you and Gene. I loved her like she was my own, and you are a true treasure, always there caring loving and watching over her. I love you like my own. I wish I could have seen her one more time. I miss you and hope I will see you soon. The two of you are a joy to know. I love you, Jan
Dear Harley: Jim and I are very sad about Gene. She is/was (it is difficult to know what tense to use when you know they are still living, only in a different plane.) a wonderful person! We will miss her. And I know that you will miss her. We are very thankful that we made the trip to Carson Valley in May and got to see you and Gene.
You always knew where you stood with Gene. That was only one of things that I really liked about her. No pretenses. I would guess that she is having a wonderful time where she is. God bless you, Harley! Gina
Dearest Harley, My thoughts and prayers are with you. It was one of the pleasuers in my life knowing and loveing friends like you two. I wish I could have seen her one more time, we should have had lunch a week earlier. But you will be together again. A part of my heart went with her. Love you two. Dixie
The Holman family sends our love and heartfelt condolences. We all will miss Gene. She was a special part of our ward family and the Carson Valley community. We know you will miss her more than anyone but we know she will be there in the kingdom waiting for you. Harley, you are in our thoughts and prayers. John, Mary Ellen, Sara, Connor and Liam
Dear Tom (that's how I know you), My heart hurts tonight, and I want to cry. Gene was so very special to me, one of the few Wolf cousins I've had the privilege to now. You two were a special couple, and I know you are in a painful place.
You have my most sincere condolences and love. Wynette Scalia
My heart skipped a beat August 1, 2012 when gene slipped from mortality. Gene was my dear friend as close as any family member could be. She was always so encouraging and uplifting and seemed to always lift my spirits and help me to always see the positive in every situation. I am a better person because I knew Gene Thompson. I'm so sorry for your lost Harley, I know you will suffer the most and may the Lord bless you and wrap you in His arms of love. I LOVE you both, Cindee Maxwell
I will miss Gene. Such a wonderful lady. I am glad that I was one of her Visiting Teachers. I am sorry that Harley is to carry on with out his wonderful wife. I send my prayers for both of you, with a big hug for you Harley.
Growing up I remember going to the Thompsen's house for dinner and how special they made me feel when I was around them. Gene would make home made pizza, even calling before hand to ask me what my favorite toppings were, as a kid that was a big deal! I was always excited to go to their house or when they came to our house for visiting teaching, because Harley and Gene were just plain fun to be around!
They had this way of making sure lessons were never boring or tedious by telling stories about the places they had been and the things they had seen. For an adolescent to sit a listen for an hour or more...without rolling their eyes...that can be a challenge!
My mom and I laughed alot around the Thompsons! ALOT! It was the little things they did, and the happiness Gene and Harley brought to us while growing up that we will remember most of all.
Our thoughs are with Harley and the Thompson family during this time. Gene was simply amazing and will be greatly missed.
I'm so sorry to hear about Sister Thompson. I cherish the memories of our time together, serving in the Cape Town South Africa mission. Sister Thompson was so kind and helpful. You both made such an impact in the areas you served.
Please know how much you are loved and respected by all of your fellow missionaries, young and old.
Gene was a wonderful women. My husband and I knew from managing one of her properties. Over the years she was always such a delight to talk to over the phone. Just a class act. I know she battled physical issues for years, but she always remained upbeat and positive.
You are in our thoughts and prayers. You both have been such good examples to us as an extremely happy celestial couple. We love you so much! Thank you for all your love and concern for our family. You both showed true genuine love for all those around you and we were so blessed to be around you. Gene was a classy lady who was always so thoughful of others around her. Gene had so many awesome qualities, I wouldn't know where to start. We thank you for your help especially when we were going through some very hard times. May the Lord continue to bless you now and for all eternity. If there is anything we can do all don't hesitate to ask.
We are praying for you and your family. We loved having you and Gene here while you were microfilming our records. You are great people! Thank you for your diligence and service and for your wonderful personalities.
She will be missed. When we lived in your ward, you were both such strong examples to our family. When we were new and knew hardly anyone we had just had our 2nd baby and Gene gave us a lovely card and gift. It was so thoughtful and meant so much. Thank you Gene and Harley for all that you are and have done. The best is yet to come. Love, Michael and Rebecca Wheable
Harley, Never was there a more dear woman than Gene. Everyone she touched was a better person for it. I am glad to have re-connected with you both, as I have always loved you both dearly. I will miss her sweet laugh and wonderful sense of humor and how effortless it was for her to be so kind and giving. My love and my prayers, sukey
First, we want you to know of the great love we have for you and the great love we had for Gene. Fortunately, we have had many opportunities to tell you both this in person. How we cherish our fun get-to-gethers. We will have many special memories to enjoy throughout the rest of our lives.
We can't think of any friendship we hold dearer than that of you and Gene. You have a very special place in our lives and have been such a powerful influence for good in our lives.
Gene was so much fun to be around and such an interesting person. She was always so poised and cared so much for others. We wish we had been able to know her years ago, but we cherish the past 10+ years we have been friends.
As we told you before, Gene was one classy lady! Refined but with a little bit of craziness to balance things out.
We know she is looking down on you and praying daily that you will be OK until it is time to be by her side. We, too, are praying for you that you will have the comfort and the strength you need to keep going. You are an important part of our lives and we value your friendship more than you know.
Harley: We were shocked to learn of Gene's passing. Jeanette and I cherished knowing you and Gene while we lived in Minden. We moved from there to Providence which is a suburb of Logan, UT where we loved to people and the buteful valley but the bad air inversions in the winters drove us out because of Jeanette's asthma history. In 2009 we came to St. George, Utah snowbirding and she did well so in 2010 we came here and had a home built to our specs. Because St. George is my hometown I like it too. We are doing quite well inspite of my being 80 and Jeanette being 78. We hope to be as active and loved as you and Gene have been by all who have known the two of you. Certainly our concept of eternal family relationships brings you solace at this time. Duane & Jeanette Christian
Dear Thompson Family, We send our deepest condolences to you at the passing of a wonderful, vibrant and smart women, wife, mother and friend. I had the honor of being introduced to Gene and Harley by Mel Humne in Los Gatos in 1982, just as I was completing my LDS mission. My companion(s) and I so enjoyed dinners with you Harley (and Gene), as we worked thru your questions and doubts, and saw the light of truth slowly grow and then shine brightly in your eyes. What a blessed time we had...and now even with the pain of Gene's passing, how glorious it is to know the Gospel has been restored and that Jesus Christ has completed the atonement for me, and you and your's, and all who embrace the laws and ordinances. The plan of salvation is eternal and unchanging, and we are so blessed by it's eternal covenants. We love you and our prayers are with you. Alan and Ruth Cooper
